Tomatillos, or husk tomatoes, have been an indispensable ingredient in Mexican cuisine since pre-Columbian times. While they are sometimes referred in English to as ‘green tomatoes’, they are not unripe tomatoes. They are the fruit an entirely different plant and each one grows wrapped in a papery husk that is removed before cooking.
The tangy flavour of tomatillos have made them a staple ingredient in many Mexican sauces, the most popular of which is salsa verde. Salsa verde is used to add flavour to a variety of dishes including tacos, enchiladas, broiled meats, and more.
